10:00 – 11:00 am
Early Geometry Concepts
Room: 206A
Click here to download the presentation handout.
Presenter: Dr. Melinda Schwartz, Learning Services Educator, ORIGO Education
Research has reinforced the importance of math instruction in the early years. In this interactive session, teachers will discuss the progression for teaching geometry concepts and explore methods to help young students to connect geometry to real-world experiences.
11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Unpacking Mathematical Operations: Addition and Subtraction
Room: 206A
Click here to download the presentation handout.
Presenter: Dr. Sara Delano Moore, Director of Professional Learning, ORIGO Education
How often do you hear a student say, “I don’t get what they want me to do!”? Learn how to support students with solving word problems by exploring the meanings of addition and subtraction as operations. As students learn the stages of each operation, they recognize the different situations and create helpful representations. Students are empowered to better understand word problems and to mathematize real-world situations.
1:00 – 2:00 pm
Viva Las Strategies for Addition and Subtraction
Room: 206A
Click here to download the presentation handout.
Presenters: Dr. Melinda Schwartz, Learning Services Educator, ORIGO Education and
Sandy Szako, Learning Services Educator, ORIGO Education
A strategies-based approach to teaching number and computational fluency makes sense. Strategies provide the reasoning underlying the basic facts. In this hands-on, minds-on workshop, participants will explore the strategies, games, and activities that build number sense and computational fluency for addition and subtraction.

10:00 – 11:00 am
Viva Number Lines!
Room: 211
Click here to download the presentation handout.
Presenter: Dr. Melinda Schwartz, Learning Services Educator, ORIGO Education
Research highlights the relationship between students’ experiences with number lines and their mathematical achievement. In this interactive session for Grade K–5 educators, participants will explore the progression from number tracks to number lines, and engage in games and activities to help students improve their understanding of relative position and number magnitude.
11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Using Multiple Representations for Deep Mathematics Learning
Room: 211
Click here to download the presentation handout.
Presenter: Dr. Sara Delano Moore, Director of Professional Learning, ORIGO Education
Deep learning, as described in John Hattie’s Visible Learning™ research, focuses on recognizing relationships among ideas. When students are engaged in deep learning in the mathematics classroom, they are actively seeking to understand the underlying structure of mathematics. This is the thinking encouraged by the process standards in Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Supporting students to use and connect multiple representations of mathematics is one strategy for helping students progress from surface learning to deep learning. Visual models are particularly important, as for many learners they connect concrete models to abstract representations. This session will explore the use of a variety of representations, including visual models, for developing student understanding of subtraction, multi-digit multiplication, and fraction division.
1:00 – 2:00 pm

Fraction (or Fractured?) Understanding
Room: 211
Click here to download the presentation handout.
Presenter: Debi DePaul, Product Manager, ORIGO Education
Do you wonder why students struggle with learning fractions? This interactive workshop will focus on the underlying, and often missing, concepts necessary for students to be successful with fractions. We will explore different representations and interpretations of fractions, and why they are so critical. We will also consider how the meaning of the numerator and denominator change when the fractions are interpreted in different ways.

10:00 – 11:00 am
The Power of Discourse
Room: 211
Click here to download the presentation handout.
Presenters: Dr. Melinda Schwartz, Learning Services Educator, ORIGO Education and
Rhonda Bernard, Allen ISD Instructional Coach, Allen, TX
Research supports the idea of classroom discussion as an effective strategy for improving student achievement in math. During this interactive session, we will share the results of collaborating with classroom teachers in refining the skills required for classroom discussion. We will also examine effective techniques and use classroom videos to demonstrate them in action.
